1. Help small farmers. Most organic farms are independently owned and operated family farms of less than 100 acres. They are our last bastion of defense against Genetically Modified food production and the globalized centralization of the farm industry.
2. Protect future generations. The average child receives four times more exposure to cancerous pesticides than adults.
3. Prevent soil erosion. More than 3 billion tons of topsoil is eroded from North American crop-lands every year. That means soil is eroding seven times faster than it is being built up.
4. Protect water quality. Pesticides now contaminate more than half of the drinking water from groundwater sources.
5. Save energy. Large-scale factory farms are highly dependent upon fossil fuels. Modern farming methods consume more petroleum than any other industry.
6. Promote bio-diversity. Mono-culture is the practice of planting large sections of land with the same crop year after year. It improves efficiency for large-scale farms, but without natural diversity the soil lacks minerals and nutrients and requires ever-increasing amounts of fertilizers.
